We have been hooked by our class novel Kensuke's Kingdom and, I don't know about you but I can not wait for the next installment!

Your English homework this week is linked to our class novel and the adventurous vocabulary used by Michael Morpurgo to create effect within this incredible story.  Look at the list of words below and find their meaning within a dictionary.  Once you understand their meaning put them into sentences, linking them to the novel itself and what we have read so far.  I have done the first for you as an example.

Persuasive Advert

Due Thursday 3rd April 2014

LO: To create a poster to persuade the Penygawsi Community to use products that only use sustainable palm oil.

SC:

MUST:     Ask questions.

                Appeal to the reader's senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste and smell.)

SHOULD: Give tempting descriptions of the benefits of having the product

                 Make the reader feel special and imagine themselves using the product

COULD:   Use alliteration or a play on words

             Use exaggerated language full of adjectives and adverbs

Use the sheet below to help you plan your advert. 

Once you have finished your advert answer the follow questions.  Use the Success Criteria to help with your explanations.

1. Do you think this is a good advert, which is going to get the customers attention?  Explain why you think this.

English Half Term Homework

English Presentation

Due Monday 4th March

"Why Should We Protect The Amazonian Rainforest?"

Your task for half term is to plan and create a presentation answering the above question.  Think about including the following areas:

• Inhabitants
• Natural Resources
• Deforestation
• Animals
• Medicines

You will be presenting your research to the class during the first week back after half term as part of your Oracy Assessment for the Spring Term.  Follow the check list below to be successful in this task. 

MUST:

• Include appropriate language with clear fluent speech.
• Consistent use of direct eye contact with audience

SHOULD:

• Speak with varied tone and expression to hold audience's attention.
• demonstrate strong enthusiasm about the topic throughout entire presentation.

COULD:

• Significantly increase the audience's understanding and knowledge of the topic.
• Demonstrate full knowledge by answering all class questions with explanations and elaboration.

I am really looking forward to the wonderful facts and information you come up with.  You are all VIPs so I am not going to tell you how you record your presentation, you can choose that yourselves.  Most importantly, you need to relax and be yourselves!

Author Biography

Homework Due: Friday 7th February 2014

LO: To Create a biography on the life and works of your favourite author.

Success Criteria

MUST: 

• Include an introduction that grips the reader's attention.
• Written in third person.

SHOULD: 

• Include factual information about the author and their life.
• included a range of complex connectives.

COULD:

• Include emotions and feelings.
• include a combination of simple and complex sentences.

Remember you are all VIPs and you can present this information in what ever way you choose.  You may use the computer if you would like, it does not need to be hand written. I am looking forward to reading your work.  I will be choosing a selection to create a display in our reading corner.

Mythical Creatures

Your homework task this week is to create a mythical creature for a myth you will be writing next week.  Think about the creatures we have met in the myths read in class. Think about their powers, their appearances and the way they speak.

I will give you a sheet in class but remember you are VIPs and can record this work in any way you wish.  All you need to do is follow the Success Criteria and you will be fine.

Success Criteria

MUST: Create a mythical character which has body parts from a range of different creatures.

Label your creature using Wow words.

SHOULD: Use ambitious vocabulary to describe in detail the creatures appearance, nature, powers and why each animal part is important!

COULD: Include complex connectives in your description.

Use adverbs to help describe your creature.

Get creative Eryri!  I cant wait to see your wacky and wonderful creatures!

Book Review

Due: Monday 9th December 2013

 

 

This week's English homework is a book review.  I would like you to think about your most favourite book ever!  I want you to review it following the success criteria below.  Be creative with your presentation.  I have cleared the Learning Log Wall ready for this work to go up.  Will yours be on Display????  Follow the brief below and it most definitely will!

 

MUST: Include Author, Title, Date Published, Pages (This information is easier to find - look at the book itself.)

Tell me if it was 'unputdownable.' Did you grab the book at every spare moment?

 

SHOULD: Include information on the story and characters.

 

COULD: Include your highlights from the book, any weak bits?

 

If you would like a template then please ask me tomorrow and I will give you a sheet.  remember though, you are VIPs and are more than capable of presenting this work in your own individual way.

INSTRUCTIONS

 

 

 

LO: To write clear instructions for making a moving model of a mine shaft.

 

 

Now you have made your fabulous models it is time to write instructions to give to another class to help them make their own models.  Remember as much detail as possible is the key.

 

Below is a checklist which if you follow will help you write a high level piece of instructional writing.

 

 

 

 Success Criteria

 

MUST: Write in present tense.

           Include list of equipment (using diagrams if you wish.)

 

SHOULD: Describe method using numbered stages.

                  Include time connectives.

 

COULD: Include imperative verbs.

             Include short, clear sentences.

 

Remember to make the instructions sound easy as younger children may be reading them.  Read through your work to check for silly mistakes, especially your spellings!
